Visa & work rights

Visa, work, stay-back.

The four things you actually need to know β€” what visa you'll hold, what you can work, what happens after you graduate.

  • National student visa

Required for programs over 90 days. Apply via the German consulate in your home country. Needs proof of funds (~€11,904 in a blocked account for one year).

  • Work during studies

120 full days or 240 half days per year. From March 2024, students can also work up to 20 hrs/week without restriction.

  • Job-seeker visa (18 months)

Granted automatically on graduation. You can work any job (not just in your field) during the search β€” useful while you build the German language up.

  • EU Blue Card

For skilled workers earning above €45,300 (€41,041 for shortage occupations). PR after 21 months with B1 German, or 27 months with A1.
