Passage 1

Sleep is increasingly recognized as a fundamental pillar of health, alongside nutrition and exercise. Research over the past few decades has revealed that adequate sleep is essential for virtually every biological system in the human body. During sleep, the brain undergoes critical processes including memory consolidation, toxin clearance, and neural repair. The body releases growth hormones, repairs tissues, and regulates immune function. Without sufficient sleep, these processes are disrupted, leading to both immediate and long-term health consequences.

The effects of chronic sleep deprivation are far-reaching. In the short term, insufficient sleep impairs cognitive function, including attention, decision-making, and emotional regulation. People who are sleep-deprived show reaction times comparable to those who are legally intoxicated. Over time, inadequate sleep increases the risk of serious health conditions including obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and mental health disorders. Studies have found that adults who consistently sleep fewer than seven hours per night have higher mortality rates than those who get adequate rest.

Despite this evidence, modern society increasingly encroaches on sleep time. The demands of work, the allure of digital entertainment, and the constant connectivity enabled by smartphones all compete with sleep for our limited hours. Many people view sleep as a luxury rather than a necessity, celebrating those who claim to need little rest as more productive or dedicated. This cultural attitude, combined with economic pressures that push people to work longer hours, has created what experts describe as a global sleep crisis. Addressing this crisis requires both individual behavior change and broader societal recognition that sleep is not negotiable for human health and wellbeing.
