The antibiotic revolution that began in the twentieth century saved countless lives and transformed medicine, making previously fatal infections treatable and enabling complex surgeries and cancer treatments that would otherwise be impossible. However, the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria now threatens to reverse these gains, creating what the World Health Organization has described as one of the most significant threats to global health, food security, and development.
Antibiotic resistance develops when bacteria evolve mechanisms to survive exposure to drugs designed to kill them. This process occurs naturally but has been dramatically accelerated by human activities. The overuse and misuse of antibiotics in human healthcare, where they are frequently prescribed for viral infections against which they are ineffective, has contributed significantly to resistance development. Even more impactful is the widespread use of antibiotics in agriculture, where they are often administered to healthy animals to promote growth and prevent disease in crowded conditions, creating ideal circumstances for resistance to develop and spread.
The consequences of increasing resistance are already apparent. Infections that were once easily treated now require stronger antibiotics, longer hospital stays, and more intensive care. In some cases, bacteria have become resistant to all available treatments, leaving physicians with no effective options. The pipeline for new antibiotics has slowed as pharmaceutical companies, finding antibiotic development less profitable than other medications, have reduced their investment in this area. Without urgent action to preserve antibiotic effectiveness and develop new treatments, routine medical procedures could become dangerous, and mortality from common infections could return to levels not seen since before antibiotics were discovered.
